Advantages and limitations of magnetic drive pumps

 Pumps come in two different types, one that has some kind of seal system, and the other that does not, and these pumps are called sealless pumps. It is common for pumps to have mechanical seals. The magnetic drive pumps fall into the second category.

Advantages of Magnetic Drive pumps

  • There is no seal: Magnetic pumps do not have any seal because the electric motor (the driver) is coupled magnetically rather than a mechanical shaft. No seal means that magnetic drive pumps don’t have costs and disadvantages associated with seals. 

  • More productivity:  It is necessary to replace the seal before using the pump if it is damaged or broken. It will be very expensive and time-consuming to replace the pump seal. While the mechanics change the seals, you must shut down the operation, resulting in a reduction in productivity. Since there is no seal in the magnetic drive pumps there is no downtime because of seal replacement which makes magnetic drive pumps more productive. 

  • Maintain a safe environment: Magnetic drive pumps are mostly used to pump toxic liquids such as chemicals and acids. It is fatal if a liquid or fume leaks from a pump handling hazardous materials. As there is no seal and liquid stays inside the metal chamber of the pump, magnetic pumps provide a safer work environment. 

  • It requires less maintenance: Due to its fewer parts and reliance on magnetism, it produces less noise, friction, and heat. Because of this, it requires less maintenance after many hours of operation than a pump with seals. 

  • A leakless system: To pump liquids magnetic pumps use two sets of magnets and these magnets are situated inside the sealed pump metal body, and when the driving sets of magnets move then it rotates the other set of magnets that pumps the liquid and there is no open area except inlet and outlet for the pumping liquid. This makes magnetic pumps leakproof.

  • Corrosion resistant:  While other pumps can’t handle harmful liquid magnetic pump technology is proven to stand the most corrosive and hazardous fluids. Their bodies are made from special alloys that can withstand such hazardous liquids.

Limitations of the magnetic drive pumps 

  • Loss of power: Magnetic drive pumps use magnetic fields to transfer torque and power between the drive assembly and impeller assembly, which results in a loss of power.

  • Weakness in magnet: When magnet materials are exposed to a temperature beyond their threshold then they start losing their magnetism. 

  • Price: Magnetic pumps are very good but they are a bit pricey.

  • Running dry: In magnetic drive pumps liquid works as a coolant and lubricant. When magnetic drive pumps run dry, they create heat and friction that can damage the pump.
